What to be aware of when seeking asylum

If you have migrated to the U.S., it may be because you wish to escape turmoil or danger in your home country. At U.S. Law Center, we understand that you would like to avoid being sent back to a country that you do not feel safe in. We will work to provide you with information that you can use to  become more aware of your current options.

The first thing that you should be aware of is how rigorous the application for refugee status is. If you are hoping to attain this status, you must know that misstating something, omitting information or making one error could not only delay your progress, but it might even end with you being removed from the country. There is also a time limit of one year to complete the application. If you take longer, your case will need to have extenuating circumstances in order to be considered. This may make the application process much more straining than it would have been initially.

If your goal is to be granted asylum, you must also be prepared to show why you believe that you are eligible for this status. If you are fearful of harm or persecution by returning to your home country, then you must also be able to show why you have that fear. If you may be persecuted because of religion, nationality, social identification, certain group memberships, race or political opinion, then you may be eligible for asylum.
